AIBA admits faulty scoring system

Beijing, Aug 23 (UNI) In a statement which may cause severe heartburn among Indian sports fans, International Amateur Boxing Federation (AIBA) Disciplinary Commission member Tom Virgets has admitted that Akhil Kumar may have missed out on an Olympic medal due to a faulty scoring system.

''For a subjective sport, while the scoring might not exactly reflect what takes place, the person with the most points will be the winner most of the time. Some points will be missed. It is unavoidable under the present scoring system,'' Virgets said.

Indian coaches BI Fernandez and Gurbax Singh Sandhu had expressed their displeasure with the scoring after Akhil lost his quarterfinal bout to Veaceslav Gojan of Moldova. But they did not lodge an official complaint to avoid inviting sanctions from the AIBA.

Virgets hoped that the system will soon be cleared up and boxers will get a fairer deal.

''I hope someone will do something to clear up the ambiguity surrounding the scoring to present any more controversies in the future,'' he said.
