Akhil Kumar knocked out of Olympics

{image-akhil kooomar_18082008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Beijing: Indian boxer Akhil Kumar lost to Veaceslav Gojan of Moldova on Monday in the quarter-finals of the bantamweight (54kg) category in Beijing.

Akhil lost the bout 1 at the Worker's Gymnasium.The 27-year-old had not faced Gojan before and failed to get past the tight defence of the Moldovan boxer. Gojan went in to the attacking mode in the penultimate round as he picked up three crucial points taking his lead to 6-2. Akhil was trying his hard but couldn't be able to pose much threat against his opponent. Akhil started off his Olympic campaign with a bang as he plummeted Frenchman Ali Hallab 12-5 in a totally one-sided contest.

In pre-quarters, Akhil caused a major upset defeating Russia's world champion Sergey Vodopyanov.
