Akshay Bhatia Achieves Career-Best Round To Lead Tommy Fleetwood At St. Jude Championship

Akshay Bhatia shot an impressive eight-under 62 to lead Tommy Fleetwood by one stroke at the St. Jude Championship, a key event in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Akshay Bhatia delivered an outstanding performance at the St. Jude Championship, leading by one stroke over Tommy Fleetwood after the first round of the FedEx Cup playoffs. This event is crucial as only the top 50 players will progress to the BMW Championship from August 14 to 17, and subsequently, the top 30 will compete in the Tour Championship.

Bhatia, who began the playoffs ranked 45th, shot an impressive eight-under 62 in Memphis. His round included an eagle and two birdies on the final three holes. Fleetwood closely followed with a score of 63. Reflecting on his game, Bhatia shared that maintaining calmness on the course has been beneficial. "I'm just really trying to have a little more peace on the golf course," he stated.

Bhatia Leads Fleetwood at St. Jude Championship

Fleetwood's performance was remarkable as he ended his round with four consecutive birdies after being two under at the turn. He emphasized that hitting well off the tee was key to his success, stating: "People talk about this golf course as a second-shot golf course, but it's only a second-shot golf course if you're in the fairway." Fleetwood's ninth-place standing in the FedEx Cup virtually secures his advancement.

Justin Rose and Harry Hall are tied with Bud Cauley at six under, trailing Fleetwood by one shot. Si Woo Kim follows closely at five under in sixth place. Collin Morikawa and Rickie Fowler are among those tied for seventh at four under. Fowler faces potential elimination from the top 50, while world number one Scottie Scheffler is part of a group that shot three-under 67.

Bhatia's strategy of focusing less on pressure seems to be paying off as he aims for a spot among the top players advancing to future rounds of the playoffs. His current position puts him in a strong place to achieve this goal.

The competition remains fierce as players vie for positions in upcoming championships, with each round being crucial for their standings and future opportunities within the FedEx Cup series.
