Amritraj ousted in doubles as Bopanna-Qureshi advance to semis

By Staff

Newport, US, Jul 12 (UNI) Indian Davis Cupper Prakash Amritraj and his Luxembourg partner Giles Muller received a straight-set loss as they failed to move beyond the quarter final stage of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships here.

The wild card pair of Amritraj and Muller could not pose any challenge to Rik de Voest of South Africa and Ashley Fisher of Australia as they went down 4-6, 2-6 without troubling much to their opponents.

Meanwhile, another Indian Rohan Bopanna along with his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-haq-Qureshi won a hard-fought three-setter against Kevin Anderson and James Cerretani to advance in to the semifinals of the tournament.

The Indo-Pak duo was stretched to limit but finally emerged winners as they cornered their South African-American counterparts 7-6(4), 3-6, 10-7.

Bopanna and Qureshi will now take on the other semi-finalists - Rik de Voest and Ashley Fisher - to make it count as the Indian, who looked so promising in the singles, has already been eliminated by Prakash Amritraj in the quarter final.

However, Amritraj would bank on his chances in the singles and will face seventh seed Canadian Frank Dancevi in the semifinal to book a summit clash.
