Anahat Singh Stuns Squash Superstar El Sherbini To Reach Silicon Valley Open Last Eight

Indian squash sensation Anahat Singh produced the biggest victory of her career by defeating Egypt's eight-time world champion Nour El Sherbini in straight games at the Silicon Valley Open in Redwood City, California, on Thursday.

The 18-year-old delivered a stunning performance against the tournament's top seed and world No. 3, winning 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 in just 30 minutes to book her place in the quarterfinals of the USD 143,500 PSA Gold tournament.

Currently ranked world No. 15, Anahat showed remarkable composure and tactical intelligence against one of the most decorated players in squash history. The Indian teenager controlled the proceedings from the outset, refusing to allow her illustrious opponent to settle into her usual rhythm.

Facing a player she has long admired, Anahat demonstrated that she could compete with and defeat the very best in the sport. Her clinical 3-0 victory was a statement performance, underlining her rapid rise on the senior international circuit.

El Sherbini entered the contest as the overwhelming favourite, bringing years of experience at the highest level and an extraordinary record of success. However, Anahat showed little sign of being intimidated by the challenge.

The Indian maintained her focus during crucial rallies, managed the pace effectively and minimised unforced errors to secure the opening two games by identical 11-8 margins. She then completed the upset with an 11-7 win in the third game, sealing a memorable victory in straight games.

For Anahat, overcoming an eight-time world champion represents a significant milestone in her young career. The result also sends a strong message about her growing ambitions as she continues to establish herself among the world's leading squash players.

Anahat's latest triumph adds to an impressive run of performances in 2026. Earlier this year, she captured the World Junior Squash Championships title and subsequently strengthened her reputation with a silver medal at the Asian Games in Japan.

Her progress has been particularly noteworthy since turning professional in 2023. The teenager has already collected multiple Professional Squash Association (PSA) titles and become the youngest Asian player to break into the world's top 20.

She has also benefited from working with an experienced coaching team featuring former world No. 1 Gregory Gaultier, Indian squash great Saurav Ghosal and Stephane Galifi.

These achievements have positioned Anahat as one of India's brightest prospects in squash, with her latest victory offering further evidence of her potential to challenge established stars on the global stage.

El Sherbini is among the most successful players in women's squash. The Egyptian has won eight world championship titles and held the world No. 1 ranking for a remarkable 265 weeks. Her achievements also include four British Open titles.

Her pedigree made her the leading contender heading into the second-round encounter, making Anahat's straight-games victory all the more significant.

For the Indian teenager, this was not simply another win in a professional tournament. It was a breakthrough result against a player whose consistency and dominance have defined an era of women's squash.

Anahat will now turn her attention to another Egyptian opponent, world No. 14 Salma Hany, in the quarterfinals scheduled for October 22 at 2:15 p.m. local time, according to the supplied tournament details.

Hany is an experienced competitor who finished runner-up at the Silicon Valley Open in 2021, losing to American player Amanda Sobhy in the final.

The quarterfinal is set to be an intriguing test for Anahat as she looks to build on her breakthrough win. The two players are yet to meet on court, adding another layer of uncertainty to the contest.

Having already defeated the tournament's top seed, Anahat will head into the next round with renewed confidence and an opportunity to make an even deeper run in the competition.

Squash is set to make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, creating another major milestone for the sport and its emerging stars.

For Anahat, victories against elite opponents such as El Sherbini could prove invaluable as she
