Anand draws with Svidler and maintains his lead

By Staff

Mexico City, Sep 28: Top seed and current leader Viswanthan Anand drew with Peter Svidler in the 12th Round of the World Chess Championship being played here while the other three games finished with decisive results.

This draw means that Anand's lead over his nearest rival Boris Gelfand has been narrowed down to a single point.

Anand, playing with black, replied with e5 to his opponent´s e4 opening and then the opponents decided to fight it out in their favourite Ruy Lopez variation on Anri Marshal lines.

Both the players came well prepared and did not want to take any risks as only two more rounds are yet to be played. Anand played a tactical game but his opponent did not give him any opportunity to gain the upper hand. Realising this, none of the two showed eagerness to take any risk, and at an opportunate time both agreed for a draw.
