Anshul wins three titles in Mehta Memorial TT

Chandigarh, Aug 5 (UNI) Anshul Garg of Uttar Pradesh annexed three titles in the Prof R S Mehta Memorial North Zone Invitation Table Tennis Championship at the Sector 23 Table Tennis Hall here today evening.

Anshul emerged champion in the men's singles, young boys singles and junior boys singles finals.

Anshul easily beat local favourite Dev Saini in the men's singles final. He raced to a 3-0 lead before Dev Saini could win the fourth game by 11-9 after his shot hit the edge for the lucky point. Saini led 4-0 in this game before the score ran neck and neck at 5-all, 7-all.

In the fifth game, Saini, who started executing his topspins with confidence, led 3-0 before Anshul made it four-all and overtook his opponent at 5-4. After that Anshul did not look back and won the game at 11-7. Anshul had won the earlier three games at 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9.

Anshul Garg and Dev Saini also figured in the junior boys singles final. Playing a consistent game, Anshul beat Dev Saini 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-9.

Anshul got his third title as he defeated Hitesh Dogra of Jalandhar 11-4, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7, 12-10 in the young boys singles final.

Nadia Saini of GGS College for Women-26 wore the women's singles crown at the expense of Manisha Sharma of Patiala 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-9. The junior girls title was bagged by Meghna of Sacret Heart-26 who got the better of Sadhika Kaushal of Government Model-16) 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7.

Manisha Sharma of Patiala , however, had the consolation of winning the young girls singles title as she defeated Nadia Saini by 8-11, 11-4, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5 in the final.

Former Haryana state champion Subhash Batra distributed the prizes.

Men's singles: Semi-finals: Anshul Garg (UP) bt Pankaj Sharma 14-12, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8, Dev Saini bt Dheeraj Arora (J-K) 11-8, 12-10, 11-13, 11-8, 5-11, 9-11, 11-3.

Final: Anshul Garg (UP) bt Dev Saini 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9.

Young girls singles: Semi-finals: Manisha Sharma (Patiala) bt Meghna Kakaria (SH-26) 11-5, 11-3, 11-7, 11-8, Nadia Saini (GGSCW-26) bt Kalyani (MM-21) 11-6, 11-4, 11-3, 11-6).

Final: Manisha Sharma (Patiala) bt Nadia Saini (GGSCW-26) 8-11, 11-4, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5.
