Kimi Antonelli Expresses Regret To Max Verstappen Following Austrian Grand Prix Collision

Kimi Antonelli apologised to Max Verstappen after causing a collision at the Austrian Grand Prix. The incident affected both drivers' performances and standings.

Kimi Antonelli expressed regret to Max Verstappen after a collision at the Austrian Grand Prix. The incident occurred at the first corner, impacting Verstappen's chance to win Red Bull's home race. Antonelli, driving a Mercedes, lost control and has been penalised with a three-place grid drop for the upcoming British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Antonelli explained his mistake to Sky Sports F1, saying he didn't brake too late but locked the rears due to hard braking behind other cars. He couldn't stop the car in time and had to avoid Liam Lawson. As he approached too quickly, he locked the front wheels and accelerated instead of slowing down, making the crash unavoidable. He apologised to his team and Verstappen, acknowledging that Verstappen was merely a passenger in the incident.

Antonelli Apologises to Verstappen After Crash

Before this race, Verstappen held impressive records at the Red Bull Ring with four wins, six podiums, four poles, and four fastest laps. However, this time he could only watch as Lando Norris outperformed his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. The pair extended their lead in the championship standings.

Reflecting on his performance, Verstappen noted it was unfortunate like qualifying day. He admitted their pace wasn't great throughout the weekend and saw it as an opportunity to learn for future races. Despite not achieving an ideal result, he remained optimistic about improving next weekend.

Verstappen wasn't overly upset with Antonelli after reviewing footage of the incident. "I saw the footage once I came back and it happens," he said. He acknowledged that every driver makes such mistakes during their careers and praised Antonelli's talent, confident that he would learn from this experience.

In terms of championship standings, Verstappen is third with 155 points. He trails second-place Norris by 46 points and leader Piastri by 61 points. This gap highlights the competitive nature of this season's championship battle among top drivers.
