Anush Agarwalla To Make Historic Debut For India In Dressage At Paris Olympics

Anush Agarwalla has been chosen to represent India in the Dressage event at the Paris Olympics, marking the country's first foray into the discipline. His selection follows a series of remarkable performances, outperforming Shruti Vora with a higher average score and meeting the rigorous eligibility criteria set by the Equestrian Federation of India.

Anush Agarwalla has been chosen by the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) to represent India in the Dressage event at the upcoming Paris Games. This marks India's first-ever entry in the Dressage event at the Olympics, as riders have previously only competed in Eventing categories.

Agarwalla's selection came after a careful evaluation of recent performances, where he edged out close contender Shruti Vora based on a better average score.

Agarwalla has been consistently performing well since the qualification period began last year, achieving the Minimum Eligibility Requirement (MER) four times. In contrast, veteran Shruti Vora earned two MERs this month. Anush's average score of 67.695% was higher than Shruti's 67.163%.

Selection Criteria and Eligibility

The EFI has set criteria for eligibility for the Paris Games qualification, requiring a rider-horse combination to achieve a minimum of 67% twice between January 1, 2023, and June 24, 2024.

If more than one athlete is eligible, the athlete with the highest average in Grand Prix out of their best four events in the past year will be chosen to participate. Only scores from FEI level competitions 3* and above are counted, achieved at shows from the 2023 to 2024 list of MER events.

Shruti Vora became eligible for Olympic qualification after earning her second MER of the year with a second-place finish at the Brno Grand Prix in Czech Republic, scoring 68.174 in the Dressage event. Earlier this month, she became the first Indian rider to win a three-star Grand Prix event Dressage World Cup held in Lipica, Slovenia with a score of 67.761.

Anush Agarwalla's MER Achievements

Anush Agarwalla achieved MERs four times: 67.936% (Wiesbaden, May 2024), 68.261% (December 2023 in Mechelen), 67.152% (December 2023 in Frankfurt), and 67.804% (October 2023 in Wroclaw). The Executive Council unanimously took this decision, and it was approved by the President.

India has previously been represented by Fouaad Mirza at the Tokyo Games in 2020, Imtiaz Anees at Sydney Games in 2000, Indrajit Lamba at Atlanta Games in 1996, and Jitendrajit Singh Ahluwalia, Hussain Singh, Mohammed Khan and Darya Singh at Moscow Games in 1980.
