Archery at Paris Olympics 2024 Schedule: Know All About Ranking Round, Seeding, Competition Format

The Paris 2024 Olympics will see some of the world's best archers compete for glory at the Esplanade des Invalides from July 25th to August 4th. 128 archers, 64 men and 64 women, will vie for top honours across five events, including the returning mixed team recurve competition. The action begins on July 25th with ranking rounds for all events, allowing archers to establish their seeding for the knockout stages. After a two-day break for the opening ceremony and athlete preparation, the pressure intensifies as the matchplay rounds take centre stage from July 28th to August 4th.

Archery at Paris Olympics 2024 Schedule

With elimination a constant threat, archers will need nerves of steel and unwavering focus to hit the bullseye and advance towards claiming an Olympic medal.

Ranking and Seeding

Instead of individual competition rounds, archers shoot a maximum of 72 arrows to determine their starting position (seed) in the single-elimination tournament. Their score also goes towards their team's seed, calculated by combining individual scores from each team member.

This ranking round also serves as a qualifier for the mixed team event. The top 16 nations with the best combined scores from a male and female archer from each country get to compete, along with the top 16 individual archers overall.

Competition Format (Individual Men's & Women's Teams)

All archers compete in a single-elimination tournament where every loss eliminates you from the competition, except for the semifinal losers who face off for the bronze medal. Seeding is crucial as the archer with the highest ranking from the ranking round faces the lowest-ranked archer in the first round and so on. This creates a path through the competition where winners tend to face tougher opponents as they progress.

To determine the winner of a match, archers participate in a best-of-five set system. Each set consists of three arrows per archer and the winner of each set earns two points. Ties within a set award one point to each archer. If the match score is tied 5-5 after all five sets, a single final arrow shoot-off is held to determine the victor.

Mixed Team Event

Similar to the individual and team events, the mixed team event uses a single-elimination bracket. However, only the top 16 teams based on the ranking round qualify to compete. Matches follow a best-of-four set system with a slight twist.

Each team consists of one man and one woman, and both archers shoot two arrows per set, bringing the total arrows per team per set to four. This adds a layer of teamwork and strategy to the competition.
