Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi delivered India's first win at the fourth edition of the Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters 2026, defeating American GM Hans Niemann in the third round at The Westin Chennai Velachery on Friday.

After beginning the tournament with two successive draws, Arjun produced a commanding display against Niemann. The victory lifted Arjun to second place in the standings with two points, leaving him just half a point behind tournament leader GM Alireza Firouzja.

Hosted by MGD1, the prestigious eight-player round-robin event features some of the world's leading grandmasters. The tournament carries a total prize pool of Rs 75 lakh along with valuable FIDE Circuit points.

Firouzja, who entered the round with a perfect record after two victories, had to settle for a draw against fellow Indian GM Nihal Sarin. Playing with the black pieces, the French grandmaster weathered sustained pressure before securing a half-point after 53 moves to retain his lead.

In another closely contested encounter, reigning world champion D Gukesh shared the point with GM Dmitry Andreikin. Social media chess creator Suthershun Asokan, popularly known as Goofygenchess on Instagram, made the ceremonial first move before the game. Gukesh attempted to break down Andreikin's resilient defence but could not convert his slight edge, with the game ending in a draw after 54 moves when only the two kings remained on the board.

The remaining game of the round also ended peacefully, as GM M Pranesh and GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov agreed to a draw after 27 moves following a repetition of moves, with neither player able to create meaningful winning chances.
