Gukesh D's rocky start at the 2024 Norway Chess tournament continued on Tuesday, as the teenage World Champion fell to his second consecutive defeat, this time at the hands of fellow Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi.
After his opening-round loss to Magnus Carlsen, Gukesh's struggles persisted in Round 2, where he failed to recover from early mistakes and time pressure, eventually resigning after 62 moves.

Erigaisi, who has been in superb form, opened the game with a Queen's Pawn (d4), while Gukesh responded with the Nimzo-Indian Defence - a popular and strategic choice. However, the match quickly slipped away from Gukesh as he found himself trailing heavily on the clock.
By the 17th move, Erigaisi had gained a time advantage of over an hour, and Gukesh's situation worsened as the game progressed. With just seconds left by the 44th move, Gukesh couldn't withstand the pressure and resigned after a decisive knight check from Erigaisi sealed his fate.
This marks the second time this year that Erigaisi has gotten the better of Gukesh in a major tournament. The duo had previously clashed at the Tata Steel Chess event in Wijk aan Zee, where Erigaisi defeated Gukesh, ending his hopes of contending for the title. The latest setback comes just days before Gukesh's 19th birthday, adding to a difficult stretch for the young champion.
In contrast, Erigaisi has made a strong start in Stavanger. He began the tournament with a win over China's top-ranked player Wei Yi in an Armageddon tie-break and has now followed it up with a commanding win over the reigning World Champion. With 4.5 points from two rounds, he has emerged as one of the early front-runners in the tournament.
Gukesh now faces another stern challenge in Round 3 as he is set to take on American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura. Meanwhile, Erigaisi will continue his campaign against another American star, Fabiano Caruana. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on whether Gukesh can recover his form or if Erigaisi continues his impressive run on the international stage.
