Arshad Nadeem is also 'my child' - Neeraj Chopra's Mother heartfelt response after her son's silver medal

By Meeth Agrawal

In a display of profound grace and sportsmanship, Saroj Devi, the mother of India's javelin sensation Neeraj Chopra, has won hearts worldwide with her gracious response to her son's silver medal win at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Neeraj Chopra, who clinched silver with a throw of 89.45 meters, was bested by his friend and rival, Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan. Yet, it is Saroj Devi's words that have captured the essence of true sportsmanship and familial love.

Saroj Devi expressed her pride and happiness not only for her son but also for Arshad Nadeem, highlighting the camaraderie that defines their relationship. "I am happy with the silver; the guy who got gold (Arshad Nadeem) is also my child. Everyone goes there after doing a lot of hard work. I'll cook his favorite meal once he returns," she said, reflecting a rare and heartwarming level of sportsmanship. Her comment underscores a deep respect for the journey and efforts of all athletes, transcending mere competition.

Neeraj Chopra's Silver Medal Performance

While Saroj Devi's heartfelt comments shine brightly, the performance of Neeraj Chopra in the javelin throw final was equally remarkable. Chopra, who entered the finals as a leading contender, threw 89.45 meters in his second attempt to secure the silver medal. Despite his best efforts, he was narrowly outperformed by Arshad Nadeem, who set a new Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters.

Nadeem's performance broke the previous Olympic record of 90.57 meters, set by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Nadeem's victory not only earned him the gold but also marked a historic achievement for Pakistan, as it was the country's first-ever gold medal in track and field events.

Chopra's silver medal adds to his illustrious career, making him the second Indian athlete after Norman Pritchard to win multiple medals in track and field at the Olympics. His victory at Tokyo 2020 was India's first gold in track and field, and his current silver further cements his legacy.
