Tejaswin Shankar headlines the opening session of the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 as the Indian high jump star will make his international debut in the decathlon after reigning supreme in the multi-event discipline in the domestic season.
The four-day continental event takes place in Thailand's capital Bangkok from July 12 to 16. Tejaswin Shankar, who won the National Inter-State Athletics Championship gold last month to qualify for the Asian Games, will compete in three Decathlon events in the morning session.
Decathlon's 100m sprint will kickstart the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 at 9 AM local time (7:30 AM IST) and will be followed by the long jump (8:15 AM IST) and shot put (9:50 AM IST). Heat 1 of Men's 400m, women's and men's 100m relay will also take place in the morning session.
While India's upcoming 400m talent Muhammed Ajmal and Rajesh Ramesh will compete in the heats of 400m, there will be no participation in either of the 100m relays by India as the Athletics Federation of India didn't name a squad for it.
While the men's sprint relay team has been ignored for years now, the female team was pulled back after their leading sprinter Archana Suseendran was caught in the doping net. Apart from her, crucial members of the team are also not competing in the season with Dutee Chand, Dhanalakshmi out with doping suspensions. Hima Das is also out with an injury.
As far as the evening session is concerned, things will spice up with six finals taking place. The first final of the session will be the women's javelin throw final with national champion Annu Rani competing followed by the women's 1500m and triple jump finals. Two decathlon events will also take place in Tejaswin's forte event high jump and 400m run.
The men's 10,000m final will also take place later in the evening as the last medal event of the day. The timings in the list are as per local time and are 1 hour and 30 minutes ahead of Indian Standard Time (IST).
