Medal Tally after Day 4

A gold, three silver and a bronze medal on Day 4 for India
As the Day 4 of the Asian Athletics Championships 2023, it's time to take a look at the medal tally as India had another rich medal day! But did India finally surpass China in the medals table? Stay tuned!

Swapna Barman ends her four-year international medal drought as she returns to the Asian stage as well. Her last medal in 2019 was also an Asian Championship silver medal as she lost to Ekaterina Voronina to the gold in Doha as well!

Crucial gold medal for India 400m relay teams as the women's 400m and 100m relay team struggles amid doping suspensions. This is second medal for Aishwarya Mishra (in specs) at the Asian Athletics as she earlier won 400m bronze while Rajesh Ramesh finally tasted senior international success after missing out on medal in individual events. Season reviving result for Amoj Jacob as well, who had a quiet season before this!

The medal was a long time coming for the long jumper as he missed the 2019 edition as a teenager following an injury. Murali Sreeshankar has been in top form this season with his fourth 8.25m-plus jump this season! With Asian Games and World Athletics Championships coming, including the Diamond Leagues, hopes are high for this youngster!

Sarvesh Kushare wins the biggest medal of his career as this silver medal comes four years after he won the South Asian Games gold in Nepal. The four-time National Champion earlier finished sixth in the Asian Indoor Championship this season.
Sarvesh Kushare has always been in the shadow of Tejaswin Shankar in the men's high jump but a quality effort in a big-ticket event means he will have further attention in the coming months, especially with Asian Games approaching! Medal cermonies are up next!

8.37m and the youngster shouts to the top of his voice to celebrate! That's his second biggest jump of the season behind his 8.41m from earlier in the season! The jump, however, didn't improve his spot as Murali Sreeshankar wins silver medal!

Jyothi Yarraji clocks a new personal best of 23.29 seconds to qualify for the women's 200m final! Her timing was also the fastest in the semifinal heats ahead of Japan's Remi Tsuruta (23.47 seconds). Result to follow soon!

Also, the men's javelin throw qualification round was cancelled, direct final on Sunday

Swapna Barman will resume her quest for a gold medal as the heptathlon events enter their second day with two more events left to go. The 2018 Asian Games gold medallist lost her lead in the last session of the day to defending champion Ekaterina Voronina.
Apart from her, the morning session included the men's javelin throw qualification round but it has been cancelled directly to a final on Sunday or the last day of the Asian Athletics Championships 2023. The Indian quarter-milers will also be in action in the men's 400m relay qualification round while hurdle queen Jyothi Yarraji will compete in 200m heats.
The evening session will have several medals on offer with Swapna Barman competing in the final heptathlon event javelin throw while the men's long jump final will have strong medal hopes from Murali Sreeshankar, who currently is among the world leaders this season.
Men's 400m hurdles final will see Santhosh Kumar T and Yashash P in action and will have stiff competition from Japanese hurdlers, who are seen as the favourites to win the race. The men's 800m qualification round will see Mohammed Afsal and Krishan Kumar compete in heats.
The women's 800m qualification heats are also slated on the day with Chanda and Lavika Sharma competing. The men's high jump final has Tejaswin Shankar's name in the entry list but it remains to be seen if the decathlon bronze medallist will compete after two days of gruelling events in the Bangkok heat.
Earlier on Day 3, India's gold medal tally soar to five while the overall count increased to nine medals as three medals were on the day. Asian record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor defended his shot put crown while Parul Chaudhary reigned supreme in the women's 3000m steeplechase final.
