Dipika has become India's first woman squash player to win an individual medal in Asian Games history. At the Yeorumul Squash Courts on Monday, Nicol eased past Dipika in straight games 4-11, 4-11, 5-11.

The match was over in 25 minutes. Nicol entered the gold medal game. The top-seeded Malaysian was the favourite to clinch the match and she did it in style.

Nicol holds the record of not having lost a singles match since the sport was introduced in Asian Games in 1998 in Bangkok.

This was Dipika's first ever singles medal at Asian Games. In 2010 at Guangzhou, she had won team bronze.

Dipika, who celebrated her 23rd birthday yesterday, had won doubles gold with Joshna Chinappa at Commonwealth Games 2014 recently.

In the quarter-finals yesterday, Dipika defeated her doubles partner Joshna 7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 15-17, 11-9 in a keenly contested match.

Before start of the Games, both Dipika and Joshna had called the draw "unfortunate" with both Indians in the same half.

Dipika was so focused on the quarter-finals that she had forgot it was her birthday untill her finace and cricketer Dinesh Karthik called to wish.

"I was thinking about the match the whole time. Until Dinesh and Saurav (Ghosal) wished me, I didn't even realise today was my birthday," Dipika had said yesterday.
