Sprinter Amlan Borghain and two other athletes were added to the Asian Games 2023 squad on Tuesday (September 11) by the Athletics Federation of India upon the completion of Indian Grand Prix 5 in Chandigarh.
There was heartbreak for 100m sprinters, including 100m national record holder Amiya Mallick, as both men's and women's 4x100m relay teams were overlooked after failing to breach the qualification standard.

Amlan Borgohain, who competed in the relay events, was shortlisted on the merit of his 200m performance during the World University Games in Chengdu last month where he breached the qualification standard as well. The two other names included in the now-68-member track and field squad are 3000m steeplechaser Priti Lamba and quarter-miler Prachi following a positive show at the IGP 5.
Priti Lamba clocked her new personal best of 9:45.13 seconds during a two-athlete race with her competitor clocking a sub-13 timing. Prachi, on the other hand, finished third in the women's 400m race with a timing of 53.01 seconds and was included in the women's 400m relay squad. There was another change in the track and field squad as Asian Championships medallist Vikash Singh replaced 20km racewalk Aksdeep Singh, who is out with an injury.
The men's 4x100m relay team, meanwhile, lost out on the automatic qualification standard of 39.00 seconds as Harjit Singh, Amiya, Amlan Borgohain and Siva Kumar B combined to clock 39.24 seconds. The women's relay team - consists of Jyothi Yarraji, Srabani Nanda, Nithya Gande, and Vijaya Kumari - fell short of the qualification mark by just 0.016 seconds as they clocked 44.66 seconds.
Meanwhile, Discus throw legend Seema Antil Punia proved her fitness for the Asian Games 2023 with a season-best throw of 57.96 metre while 800m and 1500m national record holder Jinson Johnson posted his season-best timing as well in 1500m at 3:39.32 seconds with his sole focus on the event for the Asian Games 2023.
Among the women's mid-distance runners, Chanda and Harmilan Bains also passed the re-screening with flying colours as the duo finished first and second spots in the 800m event. 400m hurdler Nithya Ramraj also proved her fitness with a sensational timing of 55.43 seconds, which was just 0.01 seconds short of PT Usha's long-standing national record, set in 1984.
