Asian Games 2023: Boxing Schedule on September 24, Nikhat Zareen compete in opening round

Asian Games 2023 Day 1 is underway in the Chinese city of Hangzhou with some of the Indian athletes fighting for medals as early as September 24 (Friday) as the action begins early morning in India. For boxing fans, it's a big day as two-time World Champion Nikhat Zareen will make her Asian Games debut.

In total, 655 Indian athletes are competing at the Asian Games 2023 and most of them were present at the opening ceremony on Saturday, which saw Men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and boxer Lovlina Borgohain as the tricolour's flagbearers.

Asian Games 2023 will not just be about medals for participating boxers as quota spots for the Paris Olympics 2024 are also on offer in Hangzhou. In total, 34 quota spots are up for grabs in both the men's and the women's Olympic weight categories.

While the gold and silver medallists will qualify for the Olympics, Shiva Thapa, who has won six medals at the Asian Championships, is yet to win his first Asian Games medal while the likes of Nishant Dev and Deepak Bhoria are also seen as interesting prospects.

Boxing joined the Asian Games program in 1954.The Hangzhou Asian Games was originally due to take place in 2022 but was postponed by one year because of the global pandemic.

Women: Nikhat Zareen (50 kg), Preeti (54 kg), Parveen (57 kg), Jaismine Lamboriya (60 kg), Arundhati Choudhary (66 kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg).

Men: Deepak Bhoria (51 kg), Sachin (57 kg), Shiva Thapa (63.5 kg), Nishant Dev (71 kg), Lakshya Chahar (80 kg), Sanjeet (92 kg) and Narender (+92 kg)
