Ankush Panghal Delivers India’s First Boxing Medal at Asian Games

India secured its first boxing medal at the Asian Games 2026 after Ankush Panghal defeated Tajikistan's Nekruz Salimov by a unanimous 5-0 verdict in the men's 80kg quarterfinal in Nishio on Sunday.

Making his Asian Games debut, Panghal produced a composed performance to book his place in the semifinals and assure himself of at least a bronze medal. The Haryana boxer, who won Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow last month, controlled the bout from the opening bell.

Panghal dominates quarterfinal

Panghal started strongly, landing clean punches including a straight left and right hook to keep Salimov on the back foot. The Tajik attempted to respond on the counter, but struggled to find the accuracy or impact needed to trouble the Indian.

Panghal took the opening round on all five judges' cards and maintained the pressure in the second. He continued to land consistently while quickly responding whenever Salimov tried to close the distance.

The Indian boxer also showed composure as the bout progressed, avoiding unnecessary exchanges and choosing his moments to attack. He again secured the round unanimously to establish a comfortable advantage heading into the final round.

Composed finish seals medal

With the result effectively in his control, Panghal conserved energy in the final round while keeping Salimov at bay. The Tajik attempted to increase the pace and landed a few punches, but could not overturn the deficit.

Panghal comfortably saw out the contest to complete a 5-0 victory and become the first Indian boxer to secure a medal at the ongoing Asian Games.

He will now compete in the men's 80kg semifinals, with a place in the final and a chance to upgrade his assured bronze medal at stake.
