Nagoya, Oct 2: Indian sailor Nethra Kumanan secured the bronze medal in the women's dinghy event at the Asian Games 2026 on Friday, adding another podium finish to India's strong sailing campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. The 29-year-old Chennai-based sailor, a two-time Olympian, finished third overall with 14 points.

Nethra faced a challenging start in the opening race of the finals but produced a determined response in the second and final race to keep herself in medal contention. She finished level on points with Hong Kong's Stephanie Louise Norton, but Nethra claimed the bronze after the head-to-head tiebreaker went in her favour.

Thailand's Sophia Montgomery dominated the standings to take gold with five points, while Singapore's Jania Ang secured silver with 13 points.

The bronze medal further strengthens India's impressive showing in sailing at the 2026 Asian Games. Indian sailors have already made their presence felt in the skiff events, collecting medals in both the men's and women's categories. Nethra's podium finish adds another medal to that tally and underlines India's growing impact in the sailing competition.

Who Is Nethra Kumanan?

Nethra Kumanan is one of India's leading women sailors and a trailblazer in the ILCA 6 class, formerly known as the Laser Radial. Hailing from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, she took up sailing at the age of 15 after attending a summer camp organised by the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association. Before finding her calling on the water, Nethra participated in several sports and activities, including tennis, basketball and skating, while also learning Bharatanatyam. She later moved her training base to Gran Canaria, Spain, where she worked with international coaches while continuing her education.

Nethra broke new ground in Indian sailing in 2021 when she became the first Indian woman sailor to qualify for the Olympic Games. She secured her Tokyo 2020 berth at the Mussanah Open Championship in Oman, where she won silver and secured an Olympic quota place for India. She subsequently competed at the Tokyo Olympics and qualified for Paris 2024, becoming the first Indian woman sailor to participate in two consecutive Olympic Games. She finished 35th in Tokyo and improved to 21st in Paris.

Her list of achievements also includes a bronze at the 2020 Hempel World Cup Series in Miami, making her the first Indian woman sailor to win a Sailing World Cup medal. A 12-time national champion, Nethra has also won gold at the 2022 Asian Championship in Thailand and at the 2026 Olympic-format Test Event in Portugal. Her achievements have made her an important figure in Indian sailing, while her international experience continues to inspire the growth of women's sailing in the country.
