The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 officially has its first medal - and it is a gold medal for hosts Japan, with Takumi Hojo winning the men's individual triathlon at Gamagori on Sunday.

Hojo triumphed in the opening medal event of the Games, which began at 8:30 AM local time at the Gamagori City Triathlon Venue. The event consists of a 750m swim, 20km cycling leg and 5km run, making it a sprint-distance triathlon. China got the silver medal while Kazakhstan have clinched the Bronze.

Asian Games 2026 First Medal Tally

Japan's Takumi Hojo became the first gold medallist of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, winning the men's individual triathlon in 52:56. China's Xirui Zhang finished second in 53:05, while Kazakhstan's Arlan Zhanabay claimed bronze in 53:11.

The Japanese athlete entered the competition as one of the leading contenders. Hojo, a former Asian Games gold medallist as part of Japan's mixed relay team at Hangzhou 2022, was joined by compatriot Aoba Yasumatsu, with both Japanese athletes among the leading names in the field.

The men's race also featured athletes from China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Hong Kong, South Korea and several other Asian nations. The competition was the first opportunity for the 2026 Games to award a medal following Saturday's opening ceremony in Nagoya.
