Asian Games: Lovlina Borgohain Reaches Second Straight Final After Beating World Champion Natalya Bogdanova

New Delhi, Sep 30: Lovlina Borgohain produced one of the standout performances of India's boxing campaign at the Asian Games, defeating reigning 75kg world champion Natalya Bogdanova of Kazakhstan 3-2 in a split decision to reach the women's 75kg final.

The victory made Lovlina the first Indian woman boxer to qualify for back-to-back Asian Games finals, underlining her consistency on the continental stage. She will now have an opportunity to add another major medal to her collection when she competes for gold.

Lovlina's win also strengthened India's presence in the boxing finals. She joins Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal, who had secured their places in the finals with semifinal victories on Tuesday.

With three finalists from 11 entries, India has already surpassed their medal tally from the previous edition in Hangzhou, where the country won four medals from 13 categories.

The semifinal stage also brought two bronze medals for India. Kapil Pokhariya bowed out with bronze after a 1-4 defeat to Uzbekistan's Turabek Khabibullaev in the men's 90kg semifinal. Competing on debut, Kapil showed a strong run through the tournament before falling short of a place in the final.

Priya also secured bronze in the women's 60kg category after losing her semifinal to China's Yang Chengyu. Despite the defeat, her performance ensured India another medal from the boxing competition.

India now has six assured boxing medals at the Games. The tally comprises three bronze medals: Narender Berwal in the +90kg category, Priya in the 60kg category and Kapil in the 90kg category, along with three guaranteed silver medals through the finalists.

Those silver medals can still be upgraded to gold, giving India's boxers three opportunities to finish on top of the podium. Lovlina's historic qualification adds further momentum to the campaign as India looks to convert their strong semifinal showing into gold-medal success.
