Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024: Tajinderpal Singh Toor Breaks Indoor National Record To Clinch Gold Medal

Tajinderpal Singh Toor continued his dominance at the continental level as he won the gold medal Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024 with a record throw of 19.72 metres at the Aftab e Enghelab Sports Complex in Tehran on Saturday (February 17).

Tajinderpal Singh Toor broke the 19-year-old indoor national record held by Vikash Gowda at 19.60m (2005 in the USA) during his third attempt of the evening. He managed another throw of 19.27m as the lone performer in the event.

Ivan Ivanov was a distant second at 19.02m while Dhanveer Singh finished fourth with a throw of 18.59m the bronze medal went to Iran's Mehdi Saberi, who produced an 18.74m throw. Tajinderpal Singh Toor is currently the Asian leader in the outdoor track and field events as he holds the Asian and national record at 21.77m (in Bhubaneswar last year).

This was India's third medal on the day and all of them turned out to be a gold medal as Jyothi Yarraji (60m hurdles) and Harmilan Bains (1500m) reigned supreme in the all-women morning sessions.

In the evening session (men), Asian Games silver medallist Ajay Kumar Saroj missed out on a medal as he finished sixth in the men's 1500m final with a timing of 3:52.56 seconds. Tejas Shirse qualified for the men's 60m hurdles final after coming second in Heat 2 and was due to compete in the final at the time of writing this report.

Among other Indians competing on the day, Shaili Singh (fourth) and Nayana James (fifth) finished outside medal positions in the women's long jump final with performances of 6.27m and 6.23m respectively.

Jyothi Yarraji earlier made headlines for renewing her indoor national record timing in the 60m hurdles by 0.01 seconds as she clocked 8.12 seconds for her maiden gold medal at the competition. She won a silver medal in Astana last year. For 1500m runner Harmilan Bains, it was her first gold medal at the continental level since winning two silver medals at the Asian Games last year.
