Asian Shooting Championships 2024 is all set to get underway in Jakarta on Monday (December 8) with Indian shooters vying for 5 of the 16 quota places for Paris Olympics 2024 up for grabs in the event.
On the first day of competition, the men's and women's 10m air pistol competitions begin. There are four quotas available, with a maximum of three for Indian shooters. Three Indians are competing in each of the two Olympic sports.

Arjun Singh Cheema, Varun Tomar, and Ujjwal Malik lead the men's field as they race for podium placements and the event's single qualifying spot. Last year, Sarabjot Singh became victorious for the nation. India's hopes are then carried by Esha Singh, Rhythm Sangwan, and Surbhi Rao in the women's 10m air pistol event, where a Paris quota victory is still awaiting India.
As many as 385 athletes from 26 countries will take aim at the Senayan Shooting Range in Jakarta for 256 medals (84 gold, 84 silver and 88 bronze medals), besides the Paris quotas at the Asian Shooting Championships 2024.
In both the events, world powerhouse China are not in contention as they have secured the maximum possible two quotas per event. Korea, another strong shooting nation, too is not in contention in the women's event while they can win only one in the men's event.
They should be prepared for fierce competition, though, from shooters in China Taipei, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Iran, and Japan, to mention a few. One of the athletes vying for a Paris quota is Javad Foroughi, the current Olympic champion from Iran.
India has already secured 13 Olympic quota spots for Paris in the shooting sports, including the rifle, pistol, and shotgun categories. Three quotas have been gained in pistol, while all rifle quota spots have been guaranteed.
Before world ranking spots are taken into consideration, Indian shooters will have one more qualifying event in Rio to earn quotas, following the Shotgun Asian qualifications on January 10 in Kuwait City.
