Asif's detention continues as decision not taken yet

Dubai, Jun 9 (UNI) Pakistani speedster Mahammad Asif continues to stay in detention as no decision was taken today on whether to trial the Pakistani pacer for alleged possession of contraband drugs.

The Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) official Nadeem Akram, who is keeping a close watch on the proceedings here said he was yet to hear anything from Asif's lawyers.

On June 1, Asif was detained at Dubai airport for allegedly possessing contraband drugs while he was returning home from India.

''The chief prosecutor cross-examined the witnesses who were instrumental in finding the banned substance from the bowler,'' Akram said.

He, however, did not disclose whether the prosecutors have levelled any charges on Asif. If found guilty, the fast-bowler would face a minimum of four years in prison.

Akram, meanwhile, was quoted as saying by 'Khaleej Times' that Asif's lawyers have sought a meeting with the Dubai Attorney General.

''Our lawyers have requested a meeting with the Dubai Attorney General but no time has been fixed as yet,'' Akram said.

Earlier yesterday, Asif's case was referred to the Attorney General for a decision but Chief Prosecutor Mohammed Rustom told 'The Daily' that a decision was expected any time this week.

''If the case is referred to the court, what kind of charges will be pressed against him has still to be determined. We cannot anticipate the results of the ongoing investigation,'' Rustom said.
