Assam and Goa qualify for semis

Chandigarh, Oct 1 (UNI) Assam and Goa joined the Punjab and Meghalaya in the semi-finals of the 31st Sub-Junior National Championship for Mr Iqbal Hussain Trophy here today.

Tomorrow Punjab are slated to meet Mizoram to decide group B leaders.

In a group A quarter-final league suspense continued till the end of the matches played today.

The match between Goa and West Bengal was goalless and both the team shared the points.

Both the teams were evenly balanced. Strikers of both sides had shies at the goal but failed to convert the chances that came their way.

Goa qualified for semi-final with four points whereas West Bengal made their exit.

In another match played between Uttrakhand and Assam struggle continued till the dying minute.

Uttrakhand opened the account with a lobbed ball by Rahul Negi in the third minute. Later in the 31st minute Anuj Negi increased the margin to 2-0.

The Assam team came back strongly through belatedly. Holicharan reduced the margin to 2-1 in the 85th minute and scored the equalisers in the dying seconds. The match ended in a 2-2 draw.

However, Assam qualified for the last four stage with five points.

The semifinals matches will be played on October 4 while the final will take place on October 6.
