Assam Olympic Association's new office bearers elected

Guwahati, Aug 25 (UNI) The new office bearers' body of the Assam Olympic Association(AOA) was elected today, with politicians continuing their dominion over the states top sports controlling body.

The old office bearers were practically re-elected, with a few minor changes in portfolios, uncontested.

Barely five sportspersons made it to the top 50-odd posts for which elections were slated today, with politicians and their appointees grabbing up the other posts.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was re-elected president unopposed as was state Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain as the secretary. Raj Kakoty of the state Judo association was elected the treasurer uncontested.

The seven-member committee formed to appoint the vice-presidents, associate vice-presidents, joint secretaries, associate joint secretaries, associate assistant joint secretaries, assistant secretaries and associate assistant secretaries was also mostly a politicians filled affair.

While the top Cabinet ministers and Congress leaders figured prominently among the appointees, coalition partner Hagrama Mohilary was made vice-president.

The handful of sportspersons, who made it to the AOA body included Tybunessa, Premadhar Sharma and Rup Komal Kakoty.

Earlier, the meeting of the executive body saw some heated scenes when the report on the 33rd National Games, held in February, was placed.

The new body has been elected for a term of two years. The previous executive body, though formed in 2002 itself, had continued to hold the positions for facilitating the organising of the National Games.
