Atwal makes history, first Indian to win on US PGA

By Super Admin
Greensboro, (US), Aug 23: The Orlando-based Indian golfer Arjun Atwal won the Wyndham Championship, becoming the first Indian to win on the PGA Tour.

Arjun Atwal won his first PGA Tour event and was the first Monday qualifier to earn a victory in 24 years. He defeated David Toms by one stroke. Atwal started the final round with a three-stroke lead, secured victory by sinking a pressure-packed putt for par from seven feet at the final hole.

"I don't have any words to describe this. I am so nervous and so happy," said Atwal after his victory.

Arjun Atwal was born in a Sikh family of West Bengal, India. He took up golf at the age of fourteen, playing at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club. He became a professional golfer in 1995 and became one of the leading players on the Asian Tour.

Atwal has won on the European, Asian and Nationwide tours, but has been some rough times during the past few years. This success means Atwal will have a two-year exemption on the US tour.
