Augusta National Women’s Amateur: Indian-origin Megha Ganne finishes T-7 as Spain’s Carla Bernat Escuder lifts trophy

Indian-origin amateur Megha Ganne finished her Augusta National Women's Amateur campaign in tied 7th place after carding her second consecutive 73 in the third and final round late on Saturday. The 21-year-old Stanford University student had taken the opening round lead after registering a record 9-under 63 at the Champions Retreat Golf Club. However, conditions were a lot different at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club, the venue for prestigious Major championship - The Masters.

Spain's Carla Bernat Escuder set a new Championship record of 12-under 204 to lift the 2025 Augusta National Women's Amateur trophy. She joined Masters champions Seve Ballesteros (1980, 1983), José María Olazábal (1994, 1999), Sergio García (2017) and Jon Rahm (2023) as players representing Spain to win at Augusta National.

The No. 29 amateur in the world, Bernat Escuder started the final round trailing by one stroke and was one-under on the day through her first seven holes. She then had back-to-back birdies, highlighted by an approach to inches on the par-4 ninth hole. After the tap-in birdie, she finished the first nine with a three-under 33 to take the outright lead for the first time at 11-under.

The 21-year-old began the final nine with three consecutive pars and narrowly missed an eagle putt on No. 13, extending her lead to three strokes with five holes to play. After adding another birdie on No. 15, the Kansas State University senior found the bunker on No. 17 and dropped a shot, but outlasted a late charge from Asterisk Talley to secure victory with a two-putt for par on the final hole.

The 21-year-old joins Jennifer Kupcho, Tsubasa Kajitani, Anna Davis, Rose Zhang and Lottie Woad as Augusta National Women's Amateur champions.

"I knew the tournament was going to start on No. 10 because I've watched all the Masters. As soon as I hit that second shot, I was like, oh, I need to get it together and just get this par, and I dug in, and I think that was the key. I cannot process that I won yet. I mean, it's really nice to see that after a cold winter that we had, and hard days going to the golf course and showing up, it means everything to win this tournament. It's also such an honor," Bernat Escuder said later.

"I want more Spaniards to get here and keep pushing our country up and up. Yeah, hopefully I'm not the last one. I feel that I am pretty calm in hard moments, in like under-stress moments. I also really tried to enjoy this round with my coach because it's going to be the last one. I'm turning professional this next summer. So I was really focused on smiling and just enjoying Augusta National because it's the best golf course in the world," she added.

Meanwhile, American Asterisk Talley, 16, eagled the first hole and became the first player in Championship history to eagle a par-4 hole at the Augusta National Women's Amateur. She birdied Nos. 16 and 17 to finish runner-up in her second Championship appearance. She also finished tied for eighth in 2024.
