Indian steeplechase star Avinash Sable is all set to join javelin ace Neeraj Chopra in the highly anticipated Diamond League Final in Brussels. For the first time in his career, the 3000m steeplechase national record holder will compete in the season finale, scheduled to take place over two days on September 13-14.
Sable’s inclusion in the event came after he was listed among the 12 participants for the men’s 3000m steeplechase. Though he finished 14th overall in the Diamond League standings with three points, a stroke of luck played in his favor as four higher-ranked athletes - Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma (injured), New Zealand's Geordie Beamish, Japan's Ryuji Mura, and USA’s Hillary Bor won't be competing. This gave Sable the opportunity to secure a spot in the prestigious finale, which features a winner-takes-all format.

The men’s 3000m steeplechase race is set for September 13, while Chopra will compete in the men's javelin throw the following day, on September 14.
Sable, 29, has had a remarkable year, further marking his status as one of India's premier middle-distance runners. Out of the 14 Diamond League meetings this season, five featured the men's 3000m steeplechase. Sable earned his points from two of these races. His standout performance came at the Paris leg on July 7, where he clocked a national record time of 8:09.91, surpassing his previous best.
Despite this impressive performance in Paris, he finished 14th in the Silesia leg of the Diamond League on August 25, with a time of 8:29.96. Sable also represented India at the Paris Games, where he finished 11th in the 3000m steeplechase final, clocking 8:14.18. He made history as the first Indian ever to qualify for the Olympics final in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event.
Joining Sable in Brussels is India’s track and field icon, Neeraj Chopra, who continues to make waves on the global stage. Chopra will be aiming for another successful outing in the men’s javelin throw event, where he has consistently proven himself among the best in the world.
As the two Indian athletes prepare for the showdown in Brussels, all eyes will be on Sable’s first appearance in the Diamond League Final and Chopra’s quest for further glory.
