BD Chandiwala Junior Men Boxing meet from Thursday

New Delhi, Jan 16 (UNI) More than 200 budding pugilists will vie for top honours in 11 categories when the fifth All India BD Chandiwala Junior Men Boxing Championship gets underway here on Thursday.

Talking to reporters here today, secretary of the Shri Banarsidas Chandiwala Sewa Smarak Trust Society Bhuwan Mohan said, ''This is the lone boxing tournament which offers prize money for the pugilists and we are expecting an overwhelming response this year.

The tournament would form the basis for the selection trial for the YMCA International Boxing Championship scheduled later this year, he added.

''This is being a junior tournament, we would rely mostly on the school certificate but whenever necessary, we would condust medical test to determine right age of the boxers,'' he said.

The fifth edition of the event would take place at the BD Chandiwala Sports Centre, he added.

Organising Secretary Pradeep Gupta informed the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation would provide the technical support for the event and revealed plans to start a senior championship as well in the future.

''We want to promote boxing in a big way and that's why we started our academy as well with 15 wards. We plan to assist the budding talents and hope to contribute to Indian boxing in our own way,'' Mr Gupta said.
