Beijing seizes fake mascots, some toxic
BEIJING, Feb 8 (Reuters) Beijing authorities have seized nearly 30,000 fake Olympic souvenirs, some made from toxic materials, state media reported today.
Inspectors raided three flats crammed with toys and mascots for next year's Games, the Beijing News said.
''The products were roughly crafted and some were even made using poisonous materials,'' the paper said, citing a district civil hygiene office. It did not say what poisonous materials were used in the fakes.
''Customers should be aware of these harmful products and keep away from fake Olympic souvenirs,'' the office said.
Last week, Chinese customs officials flagged a crackdown on fake Olympic merchandise, and said more than 100 cases of imported and exported goods infringing on the Olympic trademark had been handled since 2002.
The Beijing Olympics will take place in August next year.
