Belgium gets consolation victory, India wins series

By Staff

Chennai, Jan 31 (UNI) Belgium edged out India 3-2 for a consolation win in the fifth and final Test match coming back from a 0-1, 1-2 deficit here today.

India had little at stake having already triumphed 3-0 in the series. But winning the final game was important to keep the players in the right frame of mind for the Olympic qualifier in China in March.

The match began on a sedate note with the defence of both the teams holding tight as India and Belgium forced a few good moves in the first nine minutes.

Indians were foiled twice at close range off moves from the flanks by Vikram Kanth, Ajitesh Pai and Toshan Minz.

However, India forced a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Birendra Lakra tapped in a cross from the right from Bikash Toppo.

Lakra was foiled in the next minute with the Belgium goalkeeper padding the ball away.

Belgium managed to equalise (1-1)in the 27th as Thomas Brels in front of the goal defected the ball off a feeder by Jerome Troyens.

Into the second session,India made it 2-1 through Ajitesh Rai's deflection from the top of the ''D'' after missing 3 clear chances.

However, Belgium turned the tables on India levelling 2-2 through a penalty corner hit by Jerome Deykeyser and led 3-2 scoring a field gold in a left flank attack through Ceric Charles in the 58th and 59th minutes, in tandem.

Indians fought hard but failed to equalise with the rival defence holding on splendidly.
