Bengal boy Diptayan Ghosh wins gold at Asian chess in Iran

Kolkata, Jul 21 (UNI) Bengal's Diptayan Ghosh today clinched a gold medal at the U-10 boys group of the Asian Youth Chess Championship, which concluded in Tehran, Iran.

Ten-year-old Diptayan, a product of Goodricke National Chess Academy and class five student of South Point School, was the first boy from Bengal to win the gold medal at an Asian meet.

The other players from Bengal in the fray had also performed well, secretry of Alekhine Chess Club Soumen Majumder said here today.

Eleven-year-old Sayantan Das, another student of Goodricke Chess Academy, finished in a five-way tie for the second spot in the U-12 section but was relegated to fifth spot after the tie-breaker.

The third player from Bengal Shoumi Mukherjee finished 7th in U-10 Girl's category.

According to preliminary reports Indian players swept as many as 21 of the 36 medals that were up for grabs at the championships.

The final medal tally for India was 6 Gold, 5 Silver and 10 Bronze medals.

Altogehter 221 players from 15 countries participated in the tournament, which began on July 15.
