Bengal eye for Santosh Trophy with youthful squad

Kolkata, June 01 (UNI) Non-inclusion in the Indian team for SAFF Cup bolstered Bengal's chance to win Santosh Trophy in nearly two decades as just released Syed Rahim Nabi and Tasrif Ahmed joined the 20-member squad to play in Srinagar from quarter final stage.

Nabi and Ahmed, who were released from the national camp in Goa, were named in Bengal squad to be led by East Bengal's midfielder Jayanta Sen. Both, however, missed the chance to play for the SAFF Cup.

Bengal won the Santosh Trophy for a record 29 times out of 40 finals that they played since the Cup, a state level competition, was introduced in 1941. But they have not won the championship since 1988-89, and especially, after All India Football Federation (AIFF), India's supreme soccer body, introduced a rule that only players registered with state body can take part only for that state.

Bengal, seeded in the quarter finals in the 62nd edition now being played in Jammu&Kashmir for being the runners up in the last year, will leave for the venue tomorrow under coach Krishnendu Roy.

Roy said he was happy with the youthful side and hoped to do better this time.
