'Better To Focus On What’s Next’: Manu Bhaker's Take On 2026 Commonwealth Games Without Shooting

Indian shooting star Manu Bhaker has expressed disappointment over shooting being left out of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Shooting, a sport where India has traditionally excelled, was also excluded from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The exclusion of shooting along with a number of other sports has sparked frustration among Indian athletes and fans alike. "My goal is always to focus on the next competition," Bhaker said, acknowledging the challenge of staying motivated despite the setback.

"Some things are out of our hands, and we can only control what is within our reach. Instead of having regrets, it's better to focus on what's coming up," she added. Manu's pragmatic approach is rooted in a stellar career filled with both triumphs and challenges

At just 22, she has already claimed Olympic bronze in Paris. She has also won a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where Indian shooters took home an impressive 16 medals, including seven golds. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Manu Bhaker made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting.

She secured bronze in the women's 10m air pistol. Just days later, she teamed up with Sarabjot Singh to win bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, making her the first athlete from independent India to win two medals at a single Olympic Games.

Reflecting on her journey, the world championships medalist shared, "My journey has been full of ups and downs. I have won many competitions, lost many as well, faced difficult times, and delivered some peak performances. Overall, my journey has been good, and I have learned a lot."

Bhaker's comments show her resilience in tough times and her focus on future goals. Although she's disappointed that shooting is excluded, she's still committed to representing India in upcoming international events. She shares the hope of many Indian athletes who want to see shooting return in future Commonwealth Games
