The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) and REC Limited, a prominent Maharatna Company under the Ministry of Power, have collaboratively launched the Western REC Open Talent Hunt Programme at the Army Sports Institute in Pune, aimed at discovering and nurturing India's boxing talent.
The open tournaments have already seen 16 boxers from Maharashtra clinch titles in the junior and sub-junior categories, with the elite and youth categories scheduled for competition from January 12 to 19.

This initiative is part of the BFI's plan to organize four open preliminary tournaments across the country, encompassing elite, youth, junior, and sub-junior categories for both men and women. The tournaments are open for participation to anyone willing to showcase their boxing skills.
The BFI and REC express their commitment to fostering Indian boxing, considering the talent identification and development as a significant step.
The program aims to not only provide a platform for budding boxers but also to promote the sport nationwide, encouraging increased participation.
Hemanta Kumar Kalita, Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of India, highlighted the program's role in promoting the sport across the country and providing exposure to aspiring boxers.
The REC Open Talent Hunt Programme offers boxers a chance to earn a wild card entry for national camps, providing them with opportunities to train and compete at the highest level under experienced coaches and mentors, ultimately representing the nation.
The tournament structure allows boxers to participate in all four open tournaments, with top performers advancing to the combined final. Winners will be invited to pruning trials for inclusion in BFI's national camps, creating a direct pathway for talented individuals to showcase their skills at the national level.
The program is part of a series, with Northern Open Talent Hunt held in Rohtak last year, and Southern and Eastern Open Talent Hunts scheduled for Bangalore (January 28 to February 13) and Guwahati (February 28 to March 15), respectively.
The initiative aims to contribute to the growth and development of Indian boxing while providing a platform for aspiring boxers to make a mark in the national scene.
