Bhardwaj urges proper facilities to boxers to ensure Olympic success

By Staff

New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) Lauding Indian boxers for their brilliant performance at the Olympic qualifiers, former national coach OP Bhardwaj today emphasised that proper training, facilities and equipments should be provided to ensure good results at Beijing.

Pointing to the glorious history of Indian boxing, Bhardwaj said, ''we should plan out in such a way that no mistake should come in the way to miss the medals.'' Listing out the measures that need to be taken, the Dronacharya awardee said, ''the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) should allow the personal coaches of the selected boxers to accompany their wards to their national camps as is normally practised in advanced countries in sports to achive success.'' He opined that coaching camps should be conducted at high altitudes and stressed the need to put the boxers through a proper training schedule.

''Boxers should be put under rigorous training along with facilities for recreation and relaxation like massage and medical facilities,'' he stated.

''They should also be provided with Adidas boxing gloves and headgear in the coaching camps as the same equipments are going to be used in the Beijing Olympics,'' he added.

Bhardwaj rued the fact that smaller countries like Korea, Kazakhstan and Japan regularly win medals at the Olympics while India, with a much larger population, fails to do so.

He, however, hoped that all that could change this time around with five Indians qualifying for the Beijing Olympics, the highest number in the history of Indian boxing.
