In an unprecedented turn of events Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified ahead of her gold medal match for weighing 100 grams more than her 50 kg category of women's freestyle wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024.
As per reports, Vinesh Phogat made the weight for three bouts on Tuesday, but woke up a few grams over 50 kg on Wednesday morning. The 29-year-old didn't sleep the whole night and did everything in her capacity to meet the criteria. Phogat kept on jogging, skipping and cycling throughout the vain.

"It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand," Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said in their official statement on Wednesday.
Vinesh Phogat had a stunning run on Tuesday as won she back-to-back three matches to become the first women's wrestler to enter Olympics final. In the Round of 16 she stunned reigning olympic champions and world number one Yui Susaki of Japan and followed it up with two more tactically brilliant wins over the wrestlers from Ukraine and Cuba. She thwarted the challenge from Cuban wrestler with 5:0 margin.
But the unfortunate turn of events mean that Vinesh Phogat will return home without a medal. Yusneylis Guzman Lopez - Phogat's Cuban opponent in semi-final - will now compete in the final against USA's Sarah Hildebrandt.
The nation of billions waiting for their first Paris Olympics 2024 gold went into a shock after the news broke around 12:00 PM on Wednesday. A sections of fans have also alleged 'conspiracy' by PM Narendra Modi and his ruling BJP government and connected the dots with Vinesh Phogat's role in wrestlers' protest last year against Brij Bhusan Singh Charan.
