New Delhi, Feb 8: India took a 1-0 against Uzbekistan as Rohan Bopanna defeated Farrukh Dustov 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in the opening singles match of the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group I tie at the RK Khanna Stadium on Friday
In the second match of the day, the 21 year old rookie Somdev Dev Varman, will take on the singles taking on the highest ranked player in the tie, world number 185 Denis Istomin. Leander Paes has made it very clear that hes banking on the youth to help India to reach world group qualification. However, the most eagerly awaited match-up in this Davis Cup encounter is the doubles featuring Mahesh Bhupathi, whos back to national duty with the sole aim of qualifying to represent India in Beijing, alongside Leander Paes, and this is probably the last chance this legendary pair will have at winning an Olympic Gold.
India has to beat Uzbekistan, if they lose this tie, they face relegation to group 2 of the Asia Oceania pool for the first time ever.
