Bopanna not surprised at recall into Davis squad

Chennai, Mar 22 (UNI) After missing the Group-I match against Uzbekistan last month, 26-year-old Rohan Bopanna was not unduly surprised about his come back into the India Davis Cup squad for the first Asia-Oceana play-off tie against Kazakhstan from April 6 to 8.

Bopanna, who is here to play in the PSPB Inter-unit Tennis tournament, told UNI ''Just because you miss one match, it doesn't mean you should be surprised'', he added.

He also played down the reported differences with the All India Tennis Association (AITA) officials over his non-availability for the previous tie against Uzbekistan.

''I had made it clear to the AITA that since I got a chance to play in the qualifiers in the Deldre Beach tournament in US, I was not in a position to make it to the Davis Cup'', he said and added that an issue was made out needlessly out of a non-issue. However, Bopanna was looking forward to the crucial tie against Kazakhstan and said the main aim was to win and stay afloat in Group-I.

''The aim obviously is to win. If we win against Kazakhstan that's for this year and we will stay in Group-I, or else we have to play either Chinese Taipei or China'', he said.
