Botswana upset Angola with Cosafa penalty shootout win
GABORONE, July 29 (Reuters) Hosts Botswana upset Angola to win today's Cosafa Castle Cup Group C final with a 3-1 victory on penalties following a goalless draw after 90 minutes.
Goalkeeper Modiri Marumo was the hero in the shootout as his saves denied Angola, who played in the 2006 World Cup finals.
Botswana now advance for the second successive year to the last four of the southern African championship.
They join Mozambique, South Africa and holders Zambia in the the tournament's last four.
The semi-final draw was postponed today as organisers suggested they might hold another mini-tournament later this year to decide the winner rather than the knockout format.
Angola and Botswana showed the effects of a second game in successive days and created few chances in a tight final.
Botswana hit the post in the first half as midfielder Michael Mogaldi launched himself at the ball from a corner while Angola's best chance came late in the game when Nelo's long-range shot was tipped over by Marumo.
Last year Botswana caused a similar upset at the same stage of the tournament when they beat South Africa.
Namibia earlier clinched third place in the group with a 3-2 victory over Lesotho, all five goals coming in the second half.
Namibia built up a 3-0 lead despite being down to 10 men for the last 35 minutes with Brian Bendell scoring twice.
But Lesotho set up a tense finish as Sello Muso scored twice in three minutes near the end, the second from the penalty spot.
