Brussels Diamond League Final: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Deemed Ineligible Despite Earlier Invitation

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the reigning double Olympic champion and world record holder in the 400m hurdles, will not be competing in the Brussels Diamond League final, according to reports from the United States.

Despite initially receiving an invitation to participate in the prestigious event, the American track star has been deemed ineligible due to not meeting the competition's qualifying criteria.

Brussels Diamond League Final Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Deemed Ineligible Despite Earlier Invitation

McLaughlin-Levrone, who successfully defended her Olympic titles in both the 400m hurdles and the women's 4x400m relay, was slated to compete in the women's 400m and 200m events at the Brussels final. However, Diamond League rules stipulate that athletes must either accumulate enough points during the regular season or receive a "Global Wild Card" to compete in the final.

Why Is She Ineligible?

According to Petr Stastny, CEO of the Diamond League, McLaughlin-Levrone did not meet these requirements. In an email published by letsrun.com, Stastny clarified that, "It is not about allowing a specific athlete to compete or not. It is about rules and criteria which must be fulfilled by all to become eligible to compete at the WDL Final." He added, "Ms McLaughlin-Levrone does not fulfill those criteria, either by accumulating enough points or receiving a wild card."

Athletes typically qualify for the Diamond League final by earning points throughout the 14 regular-season meets. However, McLaughlin-Levrone, who has not competed in any Diamond League events during the 2024 season, has no points to her name.

In this scenario, the only way she could have been eligible would be through a "Global Wild Card," a provision that has been used in the past. For example, Norwegian runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen received a wildcard to compete in the 3,000m event at the 2023 Diamond League final in Eugene.

However, to be eligible for a wildcard, athletes must have participated in at least one Diamond League event in the current season, a condition McLaughlin-Levrone did not meet, thus ruling her out of the competition.

Missed Opportunity for the Champion

McLaughlin-Levrone's absence from the Diamond League final is a significant loss for fans and the competition itself. Known for her blistering speed and unmatched dominance in the 400m hurdles, she has captivated the track and field world with her incredible performances. Her world record in the 400m hurdles and her Olympic triumphs have cemented her legacy as one of the sport's all-time greats.

Despite the setback, McLaughlin-Levrone's achievements continue to shine. Her decision to focus on different events, like the 400m and 200m, demonstrates her versatility as an athlete and her drive to compete at the highest level in multiple disciplines. Unfortunately, without meeting the necessary qualifications, her presence at the Brussels final will be missed.
