Damian Lillard emphasised the need for the Milwaukee Bucks to collectively fill the void left by Giannis Antetokounmpo when he is unavailable. Antetokounmpo missed Tuesday's game against the Miami Heat due to swelling in his left knee during warmups. Despite his absence, Lillard scored 37 points and provided 12 assists, leading the Bucks to a narrow 106-103 victory in an unpredictable NBA Cup match.
The Bucks had a significant lead of 22 points in the second half but nearly lost it before AJ Green's two late three-pointers secured their win. This victory improved their NBA Cup record to 3-0 this season. Coach Doc Rivers did not provide an update on Antetokounmpo's condition post-game, with their next match scheduled against the Washington Wizards on Saturday.

Giannis Antetokounmpo has been delivering outstanding performances this season, averaging a career-high of 32.4 points per game with a shooting accuracy of 60.8%. He also contributes significantly with 11.9 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game. The Bucks previously lost the only other game he missed this season against the Cleveland Cavaliers on November 4.
Lillard acknowledged that while he stepped up on Tuesday, replacing Antetokounmpo requires a team effort. "It's always going to be done by committee," Lillard stated about filling in for their star player. He noted that everyone needs to contribute more when such a key player is missing from the lineup.
The Bucks have shown improvement in their performance after a challenging start to the season. They are now at a balanced record of 9-9 following an initial slump of 2-8. Lillard expressed optimism about their progress, stating that they are moving in the right direction by winning games both at home and away, even without Giannis.
Lillard highlighted that their recent victories against strong teams demonstrate sustainable progress and align with their goals for the season. "We're beating good teams," he said, noting that their current style of play reflects what they aimed for at the start of the season.
