LONDON, Feb 19 (Reuters) Billionare Russian owner Roman Abramovich is not looking to walk away from Chelsea despite his sporadic attendance at recent matches, the Premier League champions said today.
''We have had several conversations with Roman and I think I can assure you his interest in the club has not waned one iota.'' chairman Bruce Buck told reporters at a news conference detailing the club financial results.
''In signing the accounts both the board and the accountants have to make an investigation. They have taken a view (that) funding for Chelsea in the reasonable future is secure,'' Buck added, referring to Abramovich's assurance that he would continue to bankroll the club.
''In 2005 when we developed the five-year plan, Roman Abramovich was overviewing the process and creating the five year plan. He was supportive of it then and supportive of it now.'' Since he bought Chelsea in 2003, the club say Abramovich has pumped more than 500 million pounds into the club and spent more than 300 million of that on big name players.
The club posted an 80 million pound (6 million) annual pre-tax loss on Monday, the third biggest loss in football history although the loss narrowed more than 40 percent compared with a record 140 million pounds deficit a year ago.
Buck and chief executive Peter Kenyon have vowed to make the west London club profitable at an operating level by 2010 and said that it was inevitable that Abramovich would eventually want to stop pouring his money into the club.
''No matter how much money he has, at some point he (Abramovich) is not going to want to invest any more money in the club,'' said Buck.
