Caitlin Clark Criticises Officiating After 'ridiculous' Technical Foul Sparks Suspension Fears

Caitlin Clark’s latest technical foul and Brittney Griner’s shot-blocking record shaped a busy WNBA night. Clark led the Indiana Fever past the Phoenix Mercury 86-77, yet strongly attacked the refereeing. In another game, Brittney Griner reached 878 career blocks as Connecticut Sun halted a seven-game slide against the Chicago Sky with a 92-63 win.

Clark scored 24 points in the Fever victory, again driving Indiana’s offence in a key match-up. The guard also moved to five technical fouls for the season. Under WNBA rules, Clark is only three further technicals from suspension, which added extra weight to the incident that triggered the post-game outburst.

Clark blasts foul amid suspension fears

The incident came after a physical play involving DeWanna Bonner, which led to a personal foul on Clark. Clark appeared to clap in response, and the officials immediately assessed a technical foul. The decision stunned Clark, who later repeated the explanation that referees offered and challenged the logic behind it.

"I got a technical for clapping," Clark said, detailing the interaction with the officiating crew. "We should all just go on the calendar now and pick a game I'm going to be suspended for if I'm going to get technicals for clapping." Clark stressed that the referees confirmed the reason when challenged during the game.

Clark explained the exchange further and questioned the consistency of the decision. "I asked about it, they said I got a technical for clapping. If it's true, that should be taken away." Clark then added: "They said they gave it to me for clapping, so it'sjust ridiculous; I don't understand it at all. If they're going to give me a technical foul for clapping, thats their choice."

The guard then highlighted what Clark felt was different treatment between teams. "They can go back and review that call and I'd love to hear their reasons for why they gave me a foul for clapping, and why other players on their team didnt get a foul in that situation. I'd love to know. They said it was for clapping and instigating. So they dont want competitive basketballdisappointing from them."

While officiating dominated the discussion, Clark still delivered a strong statistical performance. The Fever guard paced Indiana with 24 points, helping secure the 86-77 success over Phoenix. That display extended Clark’s strong rookie campaign, even as the rising technical tally now hangs over future fixtures and creates extra scrutiny around Clark’s interactions with referees.

Elsewhere, Connecticut Sun ended a difficult run in powerful style against the Chicago Sky. The Sun won 92-63, snapping a seven-game losing streak and controlling the contest throughout. Brittney Griner’s defensive influence defined the night, as Griner set a new WNBA record for total blocks, moving the career figure to 878.

Griner spoke about the personal value of the record and the support from family members courtside. "Having my family here is big for me. Everything I do, I do for them. So, for them to see that, sitting there at courtside,is amazing. I have a lot of emotions right now," Griner said after the historic performance.

Griner also underlined the importance of the team result and connection with supporters. "But also, getting the win here, we wanted to put on a good show for these fans, and I hope they know that we are working hard every single day. We are working so hard." The night therefore combined debate around Caitlin Clark’s technical foul with a major defensive milestone for Brittney Griner.
