Indian weightlifting enthusiasts are eagerly watching Mirabai Chanu, the only Indian weightlifter to qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024. Competing in the women's 49kg category, Chanu is poised to build on her impressive legacy and aim for the ultimate prize - an Olympic gold medal.
Mirabai Chanu, who clinched a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a total lift of 202kg (87kg in snatch + 115kg in clean and jerk), has consistently proven her mettle on the international stage.

Following her Tokyo success, she continued her winning streak by securing a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and a silver at the 2022 IWF World Championships. However, her journey has not been without challenges.
In 2023, Chanu faced a significant setback due to a hip injury at the Asian Games, where she was fourth. The injury sidelined her for five to six months, raising concerns about her fitness and form ahead of the Paris Olympics.
Despite these challenges, Chanu made a comeback at the IWF World Cup in Qatar, a crucial event for the Paris 2024 qualification. Although she was far from her best, she managed to lift 81kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk, finishing third with a total of 184kg.
In the Olympic Qualification Rankings, Chanu is currently ranked #2, thanks to her stellar performance at the 2022 World Championships, where she lifted a total of 200kg (87kg+113kg). This places her in a strong position, but the competition will be fierce.
The biggest challenge for Chanu will come from China's Hou Zhihui, the Tokyo 2020 gold medalist who holds the Olympic record with a total lift of 210kg (snatch 94kg and clean and jerk 116kg). Hou also set a world record in the snatch category earlier this year with a lift of 97kg. This makes her the frontrunner for the gold medal in Paris.
However, it's important to note that North Korea's Ri Song Gum, who holds the world record with a total lift of 221kg, will not be competing at the Paris Olympics due to late entry into the qualification cycle. This absence could play to Chanu's advantage, potentially opening up the field for her to make a strong bid for the top spot.
While a gold medal may seem like a tough ask given Chanu's recent injury and the formidable competition from Hou Zhihui, the nature of the Olympics often brings unexpected results. The immense pressure and the high stakes can lead to surprising outcomes, and Chanu's experience and resilience could give her an edge.
