Chandigarh defeats Bihar 1-0 in Santosh Trophy

Jammu, May 26 (UNI) Chandigarh pipped Bihar 1-0 in a well contested match of the ongoing 62nd National Championship for Santosh Trophy held at Maulana Azad stadium here today.

The first match of cluster one was played this morning wherein Chandigarh outclassed Bihar by one solitary goal in a nail-biting finish.

Gopal Thappa utilised a pass to good effect and put his team in lead with an outstanding field goal in the 24th minute of the first half.

As the rivals kept struggling for an equaliser but the Chandigarh lads dominated the field and denied any chance to their oppositions.

Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad declared the tournament open yesterday at Bakshi stadium, Srinagar wherein host defeated Pondicherry in the opener.

The matches of cluster I and II are being played at two venues in Jammu while rest of the matches are being held at Srinagar.

Eight teams are participating in two clusters while each team from both the clusters will lock horns in the pre-quarterfinal round and the winner will meet its rival in quarterfinals to be played at Srinagar.

The tournament is being organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Football Association under the aegis of AIFF.
