Chappell's baggy green cap sells for 16,000 dollars

Melbourne, Feb 16(ANI): A baggy green cap worn by former Australian Test captain Greg Chappell shortly before he defected to World Series Cricket in the 1970s has sold for more than 16,000 dollars at an auction in Melbourne.

A spokeswoman at the auction said that the cap, worn by Chappell during 1977, was sold to an Australian private collector by Charles Leski Auctions for 16,310 dollars, including the auctioneer's commission.

Chappell captained the Australian Test side from 1975 until 1977, when he joined Australian businessman Kerry Packer's rebel World Series Cricket competition, a move that caused a schism in the cricketing world, News.com.au reports.

Chappell was stripped of the captaincy by the Australian Cricket Board amid the WSC fallout, but was reinstated as captain in 1979.

The cap has been in private hands for some years, and was last sold by rival auction house Christies Australia in 2001. (ANI)
