Chargers Sign DB Elijah Molden For Three-Year, $18.75M Deal

By Tanisha Chhabra

The Los Angeles Chargers have secured defensive back Elijah Molden with a three-year, $18.75 million contract, including $13.5 million in guarantees. This deal ensures Molden remains a key part of the team’s secondary after a strong 2024 season.

Molden, originally a third-round pick by the Tennessee Titans in the 2021 NFL Draft, joined the Chargers in August 2024 through a trade. He quickly became a reliable starter, playing 12 games before suffering a broken fibula late in the season. Despite this setback, the Chargers are confident in his recovery and future contributions.

DB Elijah Molden

Throughout the 2024 season, Molden demonstrated his versatility by playing at free safety, cornerback, and in the box. He recorded career highs with 75 tackles, three interceptions, seven pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. His performance played a significant role in the Chargers' defense, which allowed just 17.7 points per game, the lowest in the league.

With this contract, the Chargers maintain stability in their secondary, keeping Molden alongside All-Pro Derwin James and fellow starter Alohi Gilman. This move allows defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to continue using James in the slot, where he excelled last season. Additionally, veteran safety Tony Jefferson is expected to return, providing more depth to the unit.

Molden comes from a football background, as his father, Alex Molden, also played in the NFL, including a stint with the Chargers from 2001-2002. Now, Elijah Molden is set to make his mark with the team.

The Chargers expect him to be fully recovered by training camp, as there was no ligament damage from his injury. With the salary cap coming in higher than expected, securing Molden at an average of $6 million per year is seen as a smart investment. His return strengthens the Chargers' defense as they aim to build on their success in the 2025 season.
